Nonreciprocal Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Ionized Gaseous Media
The nonreciprocal propagation of electromagnetic waves in ionized gaseous media is discussed, and experimental observations are reported in this paper. The classical Faraday experiment in the optics of anisotropic media has suggested an analogous phenomenon at microwave frequencies. The anisotropic behavior of the free electron gas which is immersed in a magnetic field and subjected to an incid...
متن کاملOptical phase-conjugate correction for propagation distortion in nonreciprocal media.
We demonstrate experimentally that the effects of nonreciprocal elements or media that would otherwise spoil phase conjugation can be neutralized by using a tandem combination of a modal- and polarization-scrambling fiber and a phase-conjugate mirror. A theoretical model to explain the experimental results is presented.
متن کاملSpace-Time Multiscale Model for Wave Propagation in Heterogeneous Media
Abstract: A space-time multiscale model for wave propagation in heterogeneous media is developed. The model builds on the authors’ previous work on the higher-order mathematical homogenization theory with multiple spatial and temporal scales, and is aimed at addressing the issues of stability and mathematical consistency. Starting from the weak forms of homogenized macroscopic equations of moti...
متن کاملSound propagation in light-modulated carbon nanosponge suspensions
Single-walled carbon nanotube bundles dispersed in a highly polar fluid are found to agglomerate into a porous structure when exposed to low levels of laser radiation. The phototunable nanoscale porous structures provide an unusual way to control the acoustic properties of the suspension. Despite the high sound speed of the nanotubes, the measured speed of longitudinal-acoustic waves in the sus...
متن کاملWave propagation in subexcitable media with periodically modulated excitability.
Wave propagation in a photosensitive, subexcitable Belousov-Zhabotinsky medium is made possible by periodic modulation of a homogeneous illumination field. The propagation can be understood in terms of an interplay between the radial expansion of the wave and the motion of its free ends as the excitability varies periodically. This description leads to a simple kinematic analysis that provides ...
